When Is a Mole Concerning?

Many people have moles of different sizes and colors anywhere on their bodies. Babies can actually be born with moles. Most moles are not a big concern unless you notice they start changing or growing. At Koger Dermatology. we treat moles in Royal Oak, MI. Our staff is headed by Dr. O'Neal Koger, and Dr. Rhodonna Anderson, with a team of experts.

What Are Moles?

Most moles are harmless and they consist of small colored spots on the skin. The majority of moles are round or oval in shape with smooth edges, but they may also be flat or raised and they can feel either smooth or rough. Moles can have hair growing out of them and they appear darker on darker-skinned people. It's normal for babies to have moles at birth, and for new moles to appear in children and teenagers. Moles can either fade or disappear as a person gets older and they get slightly darker when a woman is pregnant.

When is a Mole Serious?

Some moles are actually a sign of skin cancer or melanoma. They include a change in color or a mole with more than two colors, uneven borders on a mole, or a mole that is bleeding, itching, has a crust on it, or is raised.

You should get a mole checked out by our dermatologist in Royal Oak, MI if any of these changes occur or if the mole is getting larger or more raised from the skin. Changes can happen slowly over months or more quickly over a matter of weeks.

How to Prevent Cancerous Moles
