Understanding Rosacea

Do you have questions or concerns about the skin condition Rosacea? Wondering about the signs and symptoms or treatment? Koger Dermatology in Royal Oak, MI is here with some answers.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that has periods of dormancy and “flares” where symptoms erupt again. While it can happen to anyone, most people are over 30 years of age, with fair skin, and have the ability to blush frequently.  It is more severe in men but women are more diagnosed. It may run in families.

Signs and Symptoms of Rosacea

There are symptoms that are used to diagnose rosacea and some other primary and secondary signs. All or some of these may be present during a flare.

Diagnostic

  • Thickening skin, most likely on the nose
  • Facial redness

Primary

  • Bumps, pustules, pimples resembling acne
  • Flushing of face
  • Warming or burning feeling in face
  • Irritated, red, swollen eyes
  • Styes
  • Visible blood vessels on cheeks and nose

Secondary

  • Facial swelling
  • Raised red patches
  • Stinging sensation in the face
  • Sky dryness
  • Eye dryness

Treating Rosacea in Royal Oak, MI

Treatment options are to ease the symptoms and reduce the frequency and severity of the flares. There can be topical and oral medications. Some patients may require laser or pulsed light therapy to correct the blood vessels and those with ocular rosacea in the eyes may need eye drops and other medications. Lifestyle changes may include switching their skin care routine and makeup to a non-irritating gentle brand and using more sunscreen.

Identifying the patient's personal triggers can help ward off flares. Many times wind and cold can affect the severity or even trigger a recurrence of rosacea. By tracking what is going on environmentally or what is going on personally with the patient can help find the triggers and then can be avoided.
